Stand up Poor

Friday, January 21st, 2011

“The rich man will sell you the rope to hang himself if he thought he could make a dollar off of it.”

“If the poor people in America stood up, they would outnumber the upper and middle class by millions of people. Why do millions and millions of people let a few control how they live?”

There is no reason to view the poor as stupid or in any way different from anyone else, says Daniel Nettle of the University of Newcastle in the UK. All of us are simply human beings, making the best of the hand life has dealt us. If we understand this, it won’t just change the way we view the lives of the poorest in society, it will also show how misguided many current efforts to tackle society’s problems are – and it will suggest better solutions.

Evolutionary theory predicts that if you are a mammal growing up in a harsh, unpredictable environment where you are susceptible to disease and might die young, then you should follow a “fast” reproductive strategy – grow up quickly, and have offspring early and close together so you can ensure leaving some viable progeny before you become ill or die. For a range of animal species there is evidence that this does happen. Now research suggests that humans are no exception.

Certainly the theory holds up in comparisons between people in rich and poor countries. Bobbi Low and her colleagues at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor compared information from nations across the world to see if the age at which women have children changes according to their life expectancy (Cross-Cultural Research, vol 42, p 201). “We found that the human data fit the general mammalian pattern,” says Low. “The shorter life expectancy was, the earlier women had their first child.”

– Emily says:
We learned in Owners of America: A Documentary about the End of an Empire that population growth (besides the apparent current phenomena of low income mothers having 5 kids just to get more welfare which is a current social trend not historic) – that population growth in 3rd world countries is greater than developed nations because in most poor communities it takes several in a household to perform the many duties it takes to make it in the world. Having three kids to help farm the land is better than none or just one.

Once a nation becomes more and more industrialized the need for more children starts to diminish. It’s at this pint families trend toward fewer children and living in bigger cities where they no longer work on a farm or in a community co-op type setting.

So is simply giving condoms and educating these people about sex the answer? Not completely. And even though industrialization leads to debt….it’s really the best answer to the help the world’s poor people. I wish I could say the rich is compassionate and care about the downtrodden and will help them outright….but they won’t. Maybe they will at least give them a job.

The Debt Ceiling

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

America may be doomed.

Well, that’s the sentiment of most Americans that have any inkling of what is going on in Washington.

If you watched Owners of America you will now know that DEBT is what keeps the country going. It’s what keeps it all going. Granted we would not be at this point of industrialization if Corporations could not invest and borrow to invent, expand and get ahead. Not to mention hire all those persons stimulation even more and more borrowing. The Debt Ceiling is just a measurement and a kind of keeping check on things….it isn’t much use really. Seems everytime we get close to it we just raise it again.

The Debt Ceiling: It’s a cap set by Congress on the amount of debt the federal government can legally borrow. The cap applies to debt owed to the public (i.e., anyone who buys U.S. bonds) plus debt owed to federal government trust funds such as those for Social Security and Medicare.

The first limit was set in 1917.

The ceiling is currently set at $14.294 trillion. As of Jan. 4, the debt subject to that limit totaled $13.961 trillion — or $333 billion shy of the cap.

Since March 1962, the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times, according to the Congressional Research Service. Ten of those times have occurred since 2001.

What happens if Treasury hits the limit? Again, no one knows for sure since it has never happened. But the going assumption is that no good can come of it.

“It’s shocking how the system actually works.”

I have always wondered if I ever got really famous or wealthy, would I rise up a few levels and start seeing even more the evil ways of the world. Most people go about their day not thinking much about the levels of society that exist. Because really, the bottom level is so much bigger than the rest…we forget that you cannot get into office these days unless you are already a few levels up.

Here is an interesting article from ex-CEO of Google talking about how many laws are written by lobbyists.
(Google says the Laws are written by Lobbyists)

On the hot topic of China versus America, he made an pithy distinction between what makes the world’s leading powers uniquely successful. America is a bottoms-up entrepreneurial engine, and China is more like “a well-run large business.”

Google or Schmidt does not have much room too talk really, they use lobbyists as well. I guess it’s always true…..if you have five people at a table they all may not agree on each issue, but each must learn to sit at the table peacefully with the others.

Don’t forget to read what all the people say at the end of the article.

Quote of the Day:

“The time to guard against corruption and tyranny is before they
shall have gotten hold of us. It is better to keep the wolf out of
the fold, than to trust to drawing his teeth and talons after he
shall have entered.”  — Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Virginia, 1782.

Let me tell you friends…the wolf is in the fold…

China plotting to overtake us?

Monday, October 4th, 2010

I guess we all better be really scared?

Republican Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell of Delaware said in a 2006 debate that China was plotting to take over America and claimed to have classified information about the country that she couldn’t divulge. – AP (link)

Funny article. It’s not just her, if you followed the politicians around the world more closely you would see more of this funny talking.

“I have been to China 3 times (being that a great deal of our manufacturing jobs are there). Just about about every person that I met had a brother or sister. Hardly an enforced 1 child policy. I believe that they get taxed much heavier the more children that they have. In Shanghai I walked into a Catholic church and, there were plenty of bibles there. It seems to be a true seperation of Church and State. The people there seemed free to worship as they pleased, however the govt. don’t really seem to acknowledge any particular stance on religion. I was not guided by any “official” agent. So I saw that minus the language and the food, people are people and they are very similar to us. They are just as cautious of us as we are of them. They are as powerful as they are economically now because we allowed our corp. to send plenty of jobs there and increase their standards. If she fears them so much, she should make it a top priority to bring those jobs back and create things here.”

Is This Tomorrow? – The need of an enemy…always.

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

This comic was a propaganda tool as were many films, books and television shows at the time. Around 1947 and the few years following….we longed to have another ‘bad guy’ or ‘enemy’ because after WW2 we had beaten the last one. What could be the new enemy? What could we be scared of next? What will keep the arms dealers in business and politics all in a whirlwind?

Communism
is this tomorow cover

Hopefully you have figured out that America’s Owner’s always need a ‘poster boy’ bad guy or group or religion…after Communism it was Iraq, then the Taliban and Al Quieda or better yet…Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. We’re moving into the era of Iran as our main enemy.

Check out this comic…it has a few versions and was reprinted several times. I will embed a copy for you to look at.

“The first postwar “Imagine if…” dramatizations of the Russians conquering and enslaving America, Is This Tomorrow? was published in 1947 by the Catechetical Guild Educational Society of St. Paul, Minnesota. At ten cents a copy, this fifty-two page, full-color comic book was a smashing success. It enjoyed several reprintings, and was used as a giveaway, presumably distributed to church groups. Some four million copies were printed.

Feverish Commie-takeover scenarios emerged in the mass media in the years to come, including Life magazine’s “The Reds Have a Standard Plan for Taking over a New Country” (1948), the M-G-M cartoon “Make Mine Freedom” (1948), Columbia Pictures’ 1952 film Invasion USA, the 1962 TV special Red Nightmare (“presented by the Department of Defense”), and such comic books as “The Sneak Attack” in the first issue of Atomic War (1952). But none of them could quite match Is This Tomorrow? for pure holy terror. ”
